Gate valve is a vertical movement along the center line of the path of the valve, can only be used for fully open or fully closed, can not regulate the flow.
When closed, the gate valve can rely on media pressure or external sealing. Self-sealing rely on media pressure, while the forced sealing rely on external force to press the gate to the valve seat.
When open, the gate lifting height is equal to the valve diameter when the flow path is completely open, but the actual use of the stem apex for the full open mark. In order to avoid temperature changes lead to locking, usually after opening to the apex position back 1/2-1 turn as the fully open position.
